Financing Tech Ventures – Investment Banking Perspective
December 2, 2024With Amazon Web Services (AWS) planning to invest US$1.7 billion into infrastructure and cloud services in Africa by 2029, the prospects for funding African startups have gone from 0 to 1.
“Doing what we already know how to do takes the world from 1 to n, adding more of something familiar,” Peter Thiel, co-Founder of PayPal wrote in his book “Zero to One”. “But every time we create something new, we go from 0 to 1,” he explained.
Pinaco & Co, in collaboration with Silicon Overdrive – AWS Premier Partner, recently hosted a Webinar focused on how startups can use AWS credits to accelerate their growth. Moderated by Pinaco & Co’s Business Development Consultant, Phiwa Shongwe, and featuring Nkosingiphile Shongwe as a discussant, the Webinar provided building blocks for African startups to create something new.
Siviwe Mashiya, from Silicon Overdrive, presented AWS’s partner enablement programs, funding options, and how startups can access financial resources to fuel their technological ambitions.
“Silicon Overdrive is a premier-level partner, which is the highest tier you can obtain outside of the United States where AWS is from. Only US companies can go one level higher, and that’s the highest you can get in the entirety of AWS. We are at the highest level. You [entrepreneurs] are in the right hands,” he explained.
Growing Startups with Amazon Credits
Siviwe explained Silicon Overdrive’s role in helping startups tap into AWS’s vast ecosystem. As a managed services provider, Silicon Overdrive partners with AWS to offer startups access to over 80 funding programs designed to support businesses at different stages of their growth; from pre-seed to scaling into Small and Medium-sized Businesses (SMBs) and even unicorns.

Siviwe presented how their company works with startups to provide tailored technical solutions on AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. These solutions cover areas such as AI, machine learning, data analytics, and other emerging technologies. Silicon Overdrive’s expertise and AWS’ extensive suite of tools create a powerful combination for startups looking to scale efficiently and cost-effectively.
AWS Partner Enablement and Services
A key focus of the Webinar was on the various programs available through AWS’s partner ecosystem, designed to enable startups to maximize the potential of cloud technologies. Below are AWS’ offerings:
- AWS Partner Enablement Program: This program helps AWS partners reach new markets and develop innovative solutions. It allows companies like Silicon Overdrive to bring specialized expertise to startups and help them navigate AWS’s vast range of services.
- Well Architected Framework Review (WAFR): This program helps businesses ensure that their cloud infrastructure is secure, scalable, and cost-effective. By conducting a WAFR review, startups can identify opportunities for optimization and secure additional funding.
- Migration Acceleration Program (MAP): MAP is designed for businesses migrating from other cloud providers to AWS. This program provides financial support and technical assistance to ease the transition and ensure startups get the most out of AWS services.
Siviwe emphasized the importance of correctly onboarding startups to AWS in order to unlock funding opportunities and maximize support.
“Proper onboarding ensures that startups can benefit from AWS’s resources, not just in terms of credits, but also in technical enablement and long-term business development,” he said.
Activate Program for Startups
One of the most attractive offerings discussed was the AWS Activate Program, which provides up to $5,000 in AWS credits to early-stage startups. To qualify, startups need to meet the following criteria:
- A working website
- A business email
- A business that is less than 10 years old
These credits can be used across a wide range of AWS services (excluding the newest offerings), enabling startups to experiment, prototype, and scale their solutions without the heavy financial burden of cloud infrastructure costs.
In addition to the credits, AWS offers valuable training and enablement resources through free certification courses and exam vouchers. These tools help founders and their technical teams acquire the necessary skills to optimize their cloud environments and reduce dependency on costly technical partners.
Silicon Overdrive’s Global Footprint
Siviwe unpacked Silicon Overdrive’s global footprint, explaining how the company’s services extend beyond local markets to help startups scale internationally. With a presence in key global markets, Silicon Overdrive is positioned to guide startups through the complexities of international expansion, providing them with both technical expertise and funding resources.
When discussing the steps to access AWS credits, Siviwe provided a clear roadmap: startups need to first verify their eligibility for AWS funding programs such as the Activate program, the Proof of Concept (PoC) initiative, or the Well Architected Framework Review (WAFF). He also discussed the importance of the Migration Acceleration Program for businesses transitioning from other cloud providers.
The benefits of AWS, do not only include cost savings through credits but also access to exclusive training, resources, and networking opportunities that can help startups grow. While AWS’s self-service model is powerful, Siviwe acknowledged that many startups, particularly those without in-house technical teams, benefit from working with experienced partners. Working with AWS partners like Silicon Overdrive allows startups to work smarter, not harder, by tapping into expert guidance and ready-made solutions.
